We chose our topic in the very beginning of September, we decided to pick our project on Ruby Bridges because she stands out in education. She fought the screaming mobs who disagreed with the integration of schools when she was only six years old. We were actually thinking about focusing on her when she was a child, but we noticed that the idea we could only go so far before we run out of information, ideas, and details so we decided to focus on her foundation that she created as an adult.
We conducted our research by searching Ruby Bridges on GOOGLE SCHOLAR. We used books about civil rights activists and civil rights to figure out if Ruby Bridges is in there. After looking at books for hours, we just searched Ruby Bridges and found a lot of information about her. She had a website that was all about her and her foundation that she created. We also used Galileo, it gave passages that we could use in our background. In addition to that Ruby Bridges Foundation site gave us most of our information it told us everything we needed to know about the foundation including.
We thought that a website would be cool because it was dealing with technology. Not only that, but mainly because we knew that we could cooperate better if the project was dealing with a website. One of my partners did not want to do a performance so that category was out. Another choice was a billboard, everyone was doing that category so we wanted to stand out and do something different.
Our project relates to the NHD theme because she is a leader that changed the way we see education and separating the races. She left a legacy in education by walking into William Frantz Elementary and supporting integration and helping stop segregation. Her foundation made Ruby Bridges’s school William Frantz Elementary a historical site that helped the idea of integration. Her foundation also created a school called Ruby Bridges School for Social Justice & Community Service. I believe that our group is a living example of Ruby’s work. If she did not walk into William Frantz Elementary we would not be in the same school.
